September 2009Archive
Japanese club jazz band, Soil & Pimp Sessions released new album "6".
Featuring DJ Kentaro, Ringo Shiina and Jamie Cullum, they constructed smokey and funky music with smooth melody and aggressive jazzy sound.
You can feel the top of club jazz sound.
Sendai (north area of Japan) represent hiphop trio, Gagle released 4th new album "Slow But Steady".
They are the only group who are still diggin vinyls and keeps following true hiphop method. In this album, as they did for previous releases, they created tracks with sample sources from vinyl and vintage instruments by the sense of trackmaker Mitsu The Beats. On the track, MC Hunger smoothly deliveries rhymes and navigates Jazzy groove collabrating with guest artists, Junpei Shiina, Bonnie Pink, Mahito, and KGM.
I think Slow But Steady is the best album in 2009, but like most of recent hiphop music, this music is not 100% genuine hiphop music as I was impressed in the golden era. It's like kind of Club Jazz.
Nicolay is track maker from Holland as known as a member of The Foreign Exchange. He released Volume 2 of the album "City Lights" which is titled "Shibuya" and based on the theme of Shibuya City.
Contains very beautiful downtempo tracks with sweet female vocal, brilliant synthe and smooth rhodes sound on tight breaks.
This album is one of the most recommended titles in 2009. Good music for those who have sympathy about city lights of Shibuya.
The album "Maji Magic" of mixed race hiphop band "Ii Kanji" is very mixture sound of creative music and ridiculous lyrics.
They sing stupid and absurd things with prattling japanese and english (and chinese) on impressive smooth old school hiphop beats and hardcore rock sound including myspace age music (maybe ring tone rap like KRS-One said).
You should check out the most funny and cool song "Ii Kanji no Jinsei" on MySpace or YouTube.
Kamaal The Abstract is the album of Q-tip (known as the leader of A Tribe Called Quest) which was released for promo in 2001 and had been bootleged in hiphop underground market for a long time.
This is official release of the ex Abstractions project.
The sound is totally based on genuine hiphop theory, but not pure hiphop as all ATCQ fans anticipated. This is like refined acid jazz album. I guess Q-tip visually and musically became a jazz musician.
Ofra Haza is israel female singer. Her songs hit in late 80's/early 90's and gave a lot of influence to musicians. I guess hiphop fans know her voice on the track of Eric B and Rakim song "Paid in full (Coldcut Remix)".
I think this album is not just a middle eastern ethnic pop album but one of classic titles as a late 80's disco/night club music album.
Wu-tang's latest album "Chamber Music" was officially released in Japanese market (2 months after US release though).
I guess this album is the part 2 of their 1st album "36 chambers", but like Raekwon's new album, most of part 2 things can't overcome part 1.
I think Pete Rock and Marly Marl did good work. And AZ, M.O.P., Kool G Rap, Method man are dope guest shots.
The top of businessman in hiphop world, Jay-Z released "The Blueprint 3".
I thought Jay-Z became wack MC because he didn't his true thing on his own album except guest appearance in other artists song after the 1st album "Reasonable doubt". He became a businessman.
As he dissed recent production of hiphop music like autotune in this album, he respects and represents true hiphop and did his thing by genuine method of hiphop production. But I dont' think this is different kind of music from hiphop which I used to love in 80's - 90's.
This album featured brilliant hiphop celeblities, Kanye West, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Young Jeezy, J.Cole, Kid Cudi, Mr Hudson, and Drake.
Chef Raekwon came back with the Part 2 of his notrious '95 hits debut album "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx".
Lots of fabulous producers and guest shots built up the album with Chef.
Featuring Papa Wu, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killer, Method Man, RZA, Jadakiss, Styles P, Beanie Sigel, Blue Raspberry, Cappadonna, Lyfe Jennings, Slick Rick, and Masta Killa. (also Busta Rhymes in hidden credit)
Produced by BT, J-dilla, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, Icewater Productions, RZA, Necro, Erick Sermon, Alchemist, Scram Jones, Karim, Dr.Dre, and Allah Mathematics.
I like new sounds and the lineup of featured artists, but prefer Part.1 as an album.
I will buy no more vinyl though, hiphop should be played by vinyl record.
One of true hiphop successors, LA hiphop duo, People Under The Stairs releases 7th album "Carried Away" on October 7th, 2009.
Previous album "The Next Step" and "Question In The Form of An Answers" were classic, but releases after the second album could'nt let heads nod.
The new album is really come back album. Brilliant samples and tracks with smooth flow and rhyme should be given 5 mics.
Atols, electronica artist from Kyoto released new album "Culture".
His sound is not only usual electronica click and cheap sound but more dramatic with atmospheric synth sound and thick beats using digital instruments and human beatbox (he is good at also human beatboxing.)
And cover artwork is nice.
